Divorce is a Loss, But Also a Way Forward

Unlike my clients, I have never been divorced. Yet, I do know the feeling of having my life shattered by loss — a feeling many of my clients can relate to, at least in a small way.

My loss came when my wife passed from cancer at age 37.  I was devastated, but I had to imagine a way forward.

The couples I work with are also dealing with a significant loss. In divorce mediation, rarely — if ever — do we get into the reasons for the divorce. It is simply not relevant as we negotiate the terms of the uncontested no-fault divorce. Yet, I cannot help feeling sadness for the couple as they end their marriage.

Still, most couples seem to be at peace with their decision. They have imagined a way forward in their lives, and they are committed to keeping things amicable. Many plan on co-parenting, and many also hope to remain friends with their ex-spouse.

As I work with couples during divorce mediation, I am also hoping they can find more happiness after their marriage has ended. I am always rooting for this.

Loss is a part of life — no one is able to go through life without some loss. Using divorce mediation, I hope I can help couples manage the logistics of their divorce and, as a result, a way to make the loss more bearable.
