Divorce Mediation Has the Potential to Tug at Your Heartstrings

Divorce mediation has the potential to tug on your heartstrings. What do I mean by that?

For the most part, discussions in divorce mediation focus on big-ticket items such as the marital home, investments, and debt. These issues — and how they are resolved — can have a major impact on your life moving forward.

As a divorce mediator, I find it interesting — and sometimes challenging — when couples hit a snag and find difficulty in resolving more minor issues that have symbolic meaning.

I recently worked with a couple that has two homes and millions of dollars in assets. However, it was the family couch that seemed to cause the biggest rift between them. It was the couch in their family room that neither was about to give up. From a psychological perspective, it makes sense that this piece of furniture holds so much sentimental value. It is where they sat as a family. It is where they made major decisions. It is where they found comfort when they watched TV together.

For them, it was important. In turn, it was important to me.

It is not my place to judge what is significant for couples. I try to treat each topic with equal attention. Watching a couple fight about a couch reminded me that divorce is quite sad for the couple on many levels. They are losing in so many ways. The comfortable couch in their family room will no longer be shared together, and it is completely understandable that each would want to lay claim to this part of their home.
